By Maurice Novelle

The frigid weather put an end to another wonderful softball season… kaput, finito! Thank you “weekend warriors” for the camaraderie and the great moments! It's priceless! And for those of you who were injured and missed out on all the fun, as well as those of you procrastinators, we hope to see you back in action next year.

One more day...
By Maurice Novelle

The unseasonably warm weather we are enjoying lately gave us a last minute excuse to return to the field and postpone hibernation a while longer. Let’s hope Mother Nature reward us with a few more days of benevolent weather.

On attendance today were Roque, Mauricio, Arun, Big Joe, Artie, Pedro, Mike, Pete W, Little Joe, Kenny and the writer.  We played a round robin and Little Joe’s squad came ahead 17-4-2. The player of the game was “Watch-the-tree” Mike W that had a great day at the plate crushing a pair of balls in deep center field to drive in ten runs.

See you guys next week!

Eight is enough… see ya!
By Maurice Novelle

One of Yogi Berra’s famous mangled quotes is “it ain’t over till it’s over!” But aside from any absurd soliloquies, just remember his recent Aflac commercials, our softball season is over... kaput!

On attendance today were Manny, Efrain, Sergio, Artie, Roque, Mauricio, Kenny and the writer. Little Joe and Jeff bailed out last minute. We had a good work out.

Guys, we would like to get together for a Sunday brunch sometime in December before the end of the year.  Roque had a buffet place in mind. Let’s find out who would be interested and set up a day!

Mike impersonates A-Rod "Ha!"
By Maurice Novelle

On a chilly and brisk Marathon Sunday morning, with a rare hybrid solar eclipse included, ten courageous ballplayers ventured to field 12 defying Mother Nature and holding off to the last vestiges of another terrific softball season that unfortunately is coming to an end. We refuse to call it quits yet and it was agreed unanimously that as long as the temperature or the atmospheric thermometer reading is above 50° degrees Fahrenheit we’ll carry on.

In attendance today were Big Joe, Mauricio, Jeff, Pedro, Artie, Manny, Roque, Mike W, Pete W and the writer. The player of the game was Artie who made an outstanding running catch in center field with the bases loaded. That play was the turning point of the game. It changed the momentum and Big Joe’s team walked away with a deserved 21-12 come-from-behind win. The controversial play of the game was Mike W mimicking A-Rod antics and yelling “throw to second” to distract Mauricio. Two runs scored. Was it bush league or smart play, you’ll be the judge.

See you guys next week!

Pete’s having a ball!
By Maurice Novelle

Today a WP Softball team had the dubious distinction of committing nine errors in one inning while allowing the opposing team to score eleven runs. And we probably set or broke a Guinness sports record because the nine blunders were perpetrated singly by each individual player, a rarity indeed.

The player of the game was Pete W that crushed a ball to opposite field over Mike W head for a three-run dinger.  After concluding his auspicious dash around the bases feeling exhausted, staggering and gasping for air like a dying fish flopped gleefully to the ground. What a great feeling!

In attendance were Manny, Artie, Pedro, Jeff, Roque, Sergio, Arum, Little Joe, Mike W, Efrain, Pete W and the writer.

The season is coming to an end, let’s enjoy the few remaining games, the weather has been perfect for playing ball. See you guys next week! I expect a good turnout.

Correction: Thanks Little Joe for pointing it out but Pete's ball went over Artie's head not Mike's. Sorry Pedro but Mike didn't misplace that particular fly ball...  Oops!

Great weather to play ball!
By Maurice Novelle

It’s a really silly we are not taking advantage of the nice weather. Today for instance it was another mild autumn day with temperatures in the mid 60s, you couldn’t ask for better weather conditions to play ball, but only a dozen diehards made it to field so we had to settle for the infamous round robin stratagem once again.

Big Joe’s team walked away with the win. The final score was 12-11-0.  Manny drove in six runs with three long drives and Jeff was lights out on the mound not allowing a run.

In attendance were Manny, Artie, Jeff, Big Joe, Mauricio, Pedro, Arum, Little Joe, Mike W, Roque, Mike and the writer.

Just a reminder… we started collecting toward next year’s permit fees. Bring some dough please. See you guys next week!

Another round robin!
By Maurice Novelle

With only a handful of games left to play before the end of the season, it’s very disappointing and perplexing to see attendance dwindle that much, but it’s probably more disappointing to see our teammates conduct themselves with such reckless indifference.

Yesterday I sent out an email stressing the need to respond to our Schedule-Smith game reminders. I don’t know if you’re aware but it's not free of charge. We have to pay a monthly fee for the service. And you should agree that failing to RSVP is both a display of poor etiquette and bad manners. Please be gracious and considerate with your teammates; reply to our game reminders with a simple “Yes” or “No”. It only takes a minute or so. We’re not trying to encroach into your personal life nor are we asking you the reasons you won’t be able to attend. Just respond... that's all! Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Well, not much to report today except for two triples by Big Joe. Yes, this is no typo! In attendance were Omesh, Arun, Artie, Big Joe, Jeff, Mike W, Little Joe and the writer.

See you guys next week! Don’t forget to check out our facebook page!

Beanball Scare
By Maurice Novelle

The clunk of the ball hitting John in the head was loud and sickening. At first, the overwhelming emotion was concern. A fortuitous play brought about after an errant throw by third baseman Roque plunked him flush in his left temple. It was a real scary moment but he never lost his consciousness neither his black sense of humor “if I die… are you coming to my funeral?” Hey John, feel better!

We were shorthanded again so we were forced to play another round robin. In attendance were Artie, Kenny, Jay, Pete, Little Joe, Mauricio, Mike, John, Roque, Lawman, Pedro, Arun, Omish and the writer.

Once again a reminder… we started collecting toward next year’s permit fees. Bring some dough please. See you guys next week and don’t forget to check out our facebook page!

Sloppy game errors galore
By Maurice Novelle

Well not much to report today, except for a pair of long balls by Manny and Jay. Only thirteen guys made it to the field so we had to play a round robin and as expected captain Kenny walked away with the victory. The final score was an inconspicuously 12-9-10 for a game full of errors, from booted routine infield ground balls to dropped fly balls, bad throws, you name it… you got it!

In attendance were Manny, Pedro, Artie, Pete W, Little Joe, Roque, newcomer Andrew, Mike, Kenny, Mike W, Jay, Jeff and the writer.

Just a reminder… we started collecting toward next year’s permit fees. Bring some dough please. See you guys next week and don’t forget to check out our facebook page! We have great photos and video clips!

Joes take both games
By Maurice Novelle

The Bazooka Joes without their captain swept the Mozzarella Sticks today in impressive fashion. Kenny, sporting a perfect record this year, took over managerial duties and the Joes returned last week’s favor defeating the Sticks 13-6 and 6-2 with another solid performance by ace hurler Jeff whose mauled toe didn’t seem to bother him. Big Joe was not as fortunate and was ready to throw the towel before the first inning had concluded after surrendering eight runs induced by a series of defensive lapses. Today’s MVP goes to Matt who flashed the leather at second making a couple of outstanding plays.

We had a great turnout, in attendance were Jeff, Matt, Pasquale, Mauricio, Mike W, Lawman, Eitan, Gurpreet, Red, Sergio, Pete W, Kenny, Edie, Big Joe, Manny, Joe 21, Roque, Jay, Efrain, Artie, Rahsaj, Josh and the writer.

Sticks Awaken and Beat Joes
By Maurice Novelle

It was a long time coming but the Mozzarella sticks finally managed to break the curse. An explosion of offense, with dingers by Mauricio, Joe 21 and Gurpreet and a triple by Pete W carried them to a pair of victories 13-2 and 10-8 in a double header sweep against the Bazooka Joes. A slugger fest indeed!

The player of the game was ace hurler Jeff who pitched brilliantly. The Joes loaded the bases twice but couldn’t score. In one of those instances with the bases juiced and no one out Jeff struck out Jay swinging at a nasty knuckle curve to end the inning. That was the turning point of the game.

In attendance today were Big Joe, Pasquale, Mike W, Jay, newcomer Pedro, Haj,  Little Joe, Josh, Lawman, cricket prodigy Arun, Jeff, Joe 21, Roque, Mauricio, Artie, Gurpreet, Mike, Pete W and the writer.

We need to start collecting toward next year’s permit fees. Bring some dough please. See you guys next week and don’t forget to check out our facebook page! We have great photos and video clips!

Sticks Lose Both Ends of Twin Bill
By Maurice Novelle

The Bazooka Joes didn’t need the help of their absentee captain to beat the Mozzarella Sticks by the scores of 7-4 and 13-9 respectively.  They didn’t have either the Dos Equis beer character that all men envy and strive to emulate…

His shirts never wrinkle. His shadow has been on the best dressed list twice. He is fluent in all languages, including three that he only speaks.  His passport requires no photograph.  When he dines at a fine restaurant, the waiter tips him. When in Rome they do as he does.

No, he is not the most interesting man in the world… he’s “Hot Pants” Pasquale, today’s MVP for sure! He not only made some outstanding defensive plays but also contributed with his bat and certainly got involved in all the controversial plays of the game. Welcome back Pat!

On a separate note, we would like wish Virgilio a quick recovery.

In attendance today were Big Joe, Manny, Mike W, Mauricio, Lawman, Haj, Edie, Mike, Kenny, Pat, Jeff, Matt L, Matt, Roque, Jay, Artie, Rahsau, Bobby, Joshua and the writer.

See you guys next week and don’t forget to check out our facebook page! We've got great photos! Happy Labor Day!

Kenny to the rescue followed by our fourth annual BBQ
By Little Joe Marra

Well, Mo finally got his long awaited win today, even though he wasn't present to savor it. Kenny captained the Sticks to an 11-7nine-inning conquest. The game was pretty competitive with the exception of the opening half inning and a typical Windsor Park homer. An infield pop near the mound spun out of the glove of yours truly and was followed by a couple of poor throws by the Joes leading to a six-run first inning. The lead looked good as Jeff, despite having control problems, pitched four straight scoreless innings in the middle of the game. He gave credit to a strong defense behind him.

Meanwhile Big Joe put that awful first inning behind him and his defense solidified as well. As Jeff started to tire the Joes scored five runs in the last two innings, but the Sticks held on for the win. Among the highlights, great infield work by Mike W at third and short and big time slugging by Efrain and Roque. Also in attendance were Manny, Nelson, Mauricio, Jay, Bobby, Gurpreet, Lawman, Artie, Pete W and my long, lost buddy, Angelo. I think he smelled the hot dogs and followed the scent.

Speaking of the BBQ, we would like to thank Big Joe for inspiring us once more to have this little shindig. Thank you all for the delicious contributions and good friendship and a special mention to the families of Mike W, Pete W and Manny for joining us and for working so hard. Pete W, the man with the connections, showed some good sense by inviting a couple of the park workers to join us for a while. Generosity and public relations rolled into one. Good wishes should go out to our old friend Dave, who was up from Virginia Beach visiting family and decided to come by with his family to say hi and share some conversation and refreshments.

I'm out next Sunday, so I'll see you guys in two weeks.

Electrifying game but Joes prevail 17-16
By Maurice Novelle

It came to a dreamy finale with the game on the line and today’s MVP at the plate. You couldn’t write a better script. Pete was having a blast, 5 for 5 with six RBIs, but unfortunately he would ground out to end the game and with it his hour in the sun. Reality can be cruel sometimes.

The defensive play of the game was third baseman Mike W incredible fake throw to first to decoy and tag out baserunner Matt L trying to advance to third. A heck of a play!

In attendance today were Big Joe, Matt L, Lawman, Efrain, Eitan, Mike, Kenny, Bobby, Artie, Roque, Mike W, Jay, Gurpreet, Sergio, Pete W and the writer.

Don't forget next Sunday August 25, 2013 is our annual BBQ. If you don't know what to bring, please contact Big Joe at joecoach320@yahoo.com

Joes are relentless!
By Maurice Novelle

Lately the Mozzarella Sticks cannot manage to win a game and today, well… it was no different. They dropped the doubleheader opener 12-1 and later in the night cap the Bazooka Joes battled back to tie the game up 9-9.  The player of the game was Jeff who had another terrific pitching performance.

In attendance today were Manny, Mike W, Jeff, Kenny, Lawman, Eitan, Russ, Little Joe, Bobby, Nelson, Matt, Roque, Jay, Efrain, Artie, Kevin, Mike, Big Joe, Wayne (in the DL but stopped by to say hello) and the writer.

Guys get ready for the big event on Sunday August 25 2013... "Big Joe WP Softball Annual BBQ." What should you bring to the BBQ? We need food (burguers, dogs, buns, salads, cheese, cake, etc.) and beverages, grills, charcoal, fluid, utensils, plates, cups, etc. Please contact Big Joe at joecoach320@yahoo.com

Joes are on a roll
By Maurice Novelle

The Bazooka Joes continue their hot streak by defeating the Mozzarella Sticks in both games of today’s double header 15-9 and 14-0 respectively.

In game one the Sticks were ahead 9-1 but a series of errors sparked an 11-run rally for the Joes.  From that moment on the Sticks fate was sealed. Game two felt like batting practice and resulted in a lopsided shutout for the Joes. The player of the game was Matt who chased down everything in center field and made some awesome catches.

In attendance today were Jeff, Matt, Jay, Roque, Sergio, Little Joe, Nelson (he's back), Mauricio, Efrain, Kenny, Eytan, Lawman, Mike, Pete, newcomers Mike W (played good third base), Paul and Alex, and the writer. Manny stopped by but couldn't play.

Super Diablo rocks Roque!
By Maurice Novelle

Efrain put on a show today with some mammoth shots that almost reached the tree tops in left field but Manny topped it off blasting four jacks and driving in thirteen runs; a real slugger fest that ended up in a double header split. The Mozzarella Sticks took the opener 20-11 and the Bazooka Joes won game two 11-3.

In attendance were Manny, Roque, Lawman, Matt, Kenny, Efrain, Eric, Artie, Sergio, Rahsau, Jose, Alec, Pete, Russ, Little Joe and the writer.

Kenny to the rescue
By Joe Marra

Kenny maintained a perfect substitute coach record as he led Mo's Sticks to a 16-5 victory over the Joes. Logistics were tricky since only 14 players showed, but we managed a 7 on 7 game. The difference was pitching. Jeff kept the Joes off balance while the Sticks, though not exactly pounding yours truly, hit a lot of balls down and hard, testing the Joes' defense. After 4 innings and an 11 run lead it was decided to start a new game.

Three batters in and Lawman had to leave with a sore back. With noon approaching and other players saying they had to go, the game was called. On hand: Kenny, Eytan, Russell, Matt, Sergio, Efrain, (yes, the brothers returned), Ryan, Pete, Jeff, Alec, Lawman, Artie, Mauricio and myself. Let's try to arrive earlier this week so we can start sooner. 4 innings of softball is pretty weak for mid-season. And how about surprising Mo on his return with better attendance!

Round robin bound
By Maurice Novelle

Only thirteen guys made it to the field today and we were forced to play a round robin format. Last night heavy downpours unfortunately halted any strides we had made till now and overturned all our hard work devoted to improve the field’s drainage; the aftermath some massive puddles spreading out between second and short.  Pete and Fausto were busy filling up and pushing wheelbarrows of clay soil when I arrived.

It was hot and muggy again and everyone was sweating profusely. We had a good work out! The player of the game was Kenny who probably had his best hitting performance ever driving eleven RBIs. Newcomer pitching sensation “Tony” Fausto was absolutely awesome on the mound. The final score a dilapidating 25-12-1.

In attendance today were Little Joe, Ed, Mike, Mauricio, Artie, Jay, Eytan. Kenny, Alec, Matt, Pete and the writer.

Ciao bambini!

Joes take both ends of twin bill
By Maurice Novelle

It was so hot and humid this morning that you could actually have cooked an egg in the middle of the field. Bring on the frying pan next week baby and have breakfast alfresco!

Well the Bazooka Joes today without their captain broke out the bats in force piling up 14 runs en route to a doubleheader sweep of the Mozzarella Sticks. The Joes took the first game 11-0 before triumphing in the nightcap 4-1. Jeff, the loser pitcher on both games, pitched well but was victimized by shoddy defense.  The Sticks meanwhile failed miserably in their attempts to generate any offensive opportunities against the Joes ace hurlers that were lights out.  Alec exhibited excellent command of his pitches and Roque kept the Sticks batters at bay with his nasty and elusive drop ball.

We were a little bit shorthanded today because a few of the guys were on vacation this week.  Meanwhile Big Joe, Pete and Wayne are still on the DL and Tom, Joe 21 and Nelson seem to have vanished or fell off the radar.  On a good note, it was nice to see Russ back in action.  Also, hey Big Joe… everyone’s been asking about this year’s BBQ… what’s up!

In attendance were Alec, Roque, Lawman, Manny II, Kenny, Artie, Russ, Jeff, Matt, Jay, Eitan, Rahsau, Mike and the writer.

Joes, Sticks split doubleheader
By Maurice Novelle

On an awfully muggy morning the Mozzarella Sticks won the first game 7-6 and dropped the nightcap 13-6. The player of the game was Patrick who flashed the leather at third making some nice grabs and then letting his bat do the talking with a mammoth shot to dead center for the first legit homer of the season. Haaj also hit a long drive over Mauricio’s head in right field and Manny got a hold of a couple of balls as well.  A slugfest indeed!

In attendance today were Manny (Super Diablo is back), Patrick, Roque (impressive pitching striking out Jay and the writer), Gurpreet, Kenny (great hitting as always), Haaj, Little Joe, Dave, Lawman Matt (tagged out at home), Jeff (pitched well), Mauricio, Jay, Artie (an outstanding running catch in center field), Alec (victimized by the long ball), Pete, Jeremy and the writer.

See you guys next week… and please try to show up early.

Everyone is wondering when is Big Joe and Peter coming back and… what happened to Russ, Nelson and Tom?

Happy 4th of July!

Eight is enough!
By Maurice Novelle

The Bazooka Joes took today’s twin bill opener 8-5 and then rallied back in the nightcap but the game ended in a rare 8-8 tie. Jay and Manny put on a show blasting a couple of long balls and Gurpreet made an outstanding shoestring catch in left field. But the player of the game was Mauricio who played flawless defense in center field and carried a big bat having productive at-bats at pivotal junctures.

In attendance today Manny, Mauricio, Roque, Jeff, Artie, Danny, Jose, Pete, Little Joe, Jeremy, Matt, Lawman, Eytan, Jay, Kevin, Alec, Kenny, Gurpreet, Jonathan and the writer.

Just A Dozen!
By Maurice Novelle

Nothing much to report today! So regrettably… once again we had a low turnout and after an extended batting practice session we were forced to play a modified round robin format.

This time we cannot blame the elements or the field condition, however alike the inexact science of weather forecasting determining game attendance is turning out to be unpredictable as well. Aside from the fact that we have a couple of guys on the DL and also a few are on vacation or out of town, this situation is really perplexing and I have no answers. Does anyone have any suggestions?

In attendance today were Manny, Pete, Eitan, Matt, Kenny, Rahsau, Patrick (pulled a quad), Little Joe, Kevin, Mike, late arrival Jay and the writer.

See you guys next week… hopefully!

Just BP... no game!
By Maurice Novelle

Judging by the unusual low attendance for Memorial Day weekend, Saturday’s rain might have dissuaded some of the regulars from showing up. Surprisingly enough after these last two weeks of cat-and-dog weather the infield was not as bad as one could had expected, the outfield however was in terrible shape; whoever mowed the grass did a lousy job stopping halfway and forgetting to do the outer flanks. We should contact Parks and complain about it…This is not right!

In attendance today were newcomers Patrick and Eitan, Kevin, Little Joe, Jay, Jeff, Kenny, Roque and the writer. Pete W, Russ and Edie replied with a yes to the Schedule-smith email but did not report for duty. Once again, the rationale behind it or the premise for using this interactive tool is to accurately estimate game attendance and prevent low turnouts so please we need your cooperation… thank you!

Enjoy the long weekend and don’t forget to honor and remember those brave American men and women who have died defending our nation and its values.

See you guys next week!

Game rained out again!
By Maurice Novelle

Well, we probably could have tried and wait and see who was coming before calling the game off. The weather forecast was not that bad however our current attendance report was really discouraging to say the least, just 4 yes.

We are paying Schedule-Smith on a monthly basis to keep track of game attendance and it doesn’t even take a minute to reply to the email and click in a response back. Come on… that’s been lazy and unconsidered.

Shame on you!

Cinco de Mayo Fielding Miscues Doom Sticks
By Maurice Novelle

The Bazooka Joes took care of business with another doubleheader sweep of the Mozzarella Sticks 15-6 and 5-2. Little Joe, now assuming the role of "the most interesting man in the world", mumbled... Viva Mexico!

In the opener Jeff pitched well enough to deserve a better result. His changeup was just outstanding! But a series of misplayed fly balls early on would prove costly to the Sticks that would continue to struggle defensively hindering whatever progress they made at the plate. The turning point of the game was in the bottom of the third with no one out and the bases loaded.  Little Joe who’s being pitching lights out lately turned a Houdini magic trick escape minimizing the damage by surrendering only three despairing runs.

Game two was an abbreviated affair, we only played two innings. Not much to report there. Everyone was too tired to keep going. The player of the game was Jay who had a pair of three-run dingers.

In attendance were Nelson, Matt, Jay, Kenny, Artie, Kevin, Mike, Ed, Dave W, Tony, Little Joe, Manny, Jeff, Mauricio, Rahsau, Sin, Anthony, Rob, Wayne, Pete W, Jamal, Alec and the writer.

See you guys next week… and please be on time!

Joes sweep
By Maurice Novelle

Everything seemed to indicate that we were heading for another doubleheader split but the Bazooka Joes came from behind to take both games 15-5 and 9-8 respectively.

In game one the Joes were the better team and walked away with an easy victory. Game two was a gem. The Mozzarella Sticks jumped ahead 8-0 and Artie was pitching well but the Joes rallied and tied the score. The game ended with an acrobatic running catch by Rahsau in foul territory beyond first base past the chain link fence. Kenny who was standing at second base took off and scored the winning run.  The player of the game was Haj who crushed  a three-run dinger.

We had another great turnout. On attendance were Jeff, Matt, Jay, Kenny, Gurpreet, Edie, Rob, Kevin, Little Joe, Haj, TJ, Dave W, Manny, Alec, Artie, Rahsau, Ryan, Anthony, Sin, Ed, Wayne, Eric, Jamal and the writer.

Opening Day Letdown!
By Maurice Novelle

We were expecting a good turnout for today’s opening day but only a dozen guys showed up. I guess the rest of the flock decided to join Big Joe for brunch. How were those huevos rancheros Joe?

After Friday’s heavy showers the condition of the field was not as bad as Scott led us to believe in his email. We did however have to deal with a fallen tree in left field that required some pruning. Jay and Gurpreet decided to watch us bust our humps from a safe distance, just in case.

After batting practice we played a three-inning round robin game. Little Joe’s team came out on top 14-10-3.  In attendance today were Pete, Wayne, Ed, Little Joe, Kenny, Manny, Nelson, Artie, Jay, Gurpreet, Alec and the writer.
