Marathon Sunday Twinbill Split
By Maurice Novelle
In game one the Elks captained by appointee manager Rob due to Erwin’s absence rallied to score four runs in the last inning of the event but they came up short and were defeated by the M-Picks 9-8. In game two they kept the momentum and beat the M-Picks 9-5 behind another stellar performance by ace hurler Juan.
Albeit a mishandled throw from third baseman Russ, the defensive player of the game, and without trying to sound presumptuous, was your humble servant that in the words of Jeff looked “like a Hoover vacuum at first.” Also Tommy flashed the leather at second base making a couple of sparkling plays.
The offensive player of the game was Joe 21 who blasted a pair of homers.
Despite the frigid weather the guys dragged their butts out of bed and we had a great turnout. In attendance were Matt, Luis, Juan, Artie, Roly, Mike, Dom, Rob, Lawman Matt, Nelson, Jeff, newcomer Andrew, Russ, Tommy, Joe 21, Kenny and the writer.
See you guys next week!

M-Picks win 13-8
Hostile atmosphere permeates game
By Maurice Novelle
They say that playing sports helps build character, instilling the values of teamwork and good sportsmanship. Well "my friends", stealing McCain's favorite line, after today’s pervading bickering and fighting, I must disagree with that premise. Instead of a softball game, what we witnessed today, exacerbated by the nasty remarks and evil-minded verbal exchanges, had all the signs of a hand-to-hand combat. Shame on you guys!
Also this is the first time that I hear someone make the moronic insinuation that via his very own actions and flagrantly cheating demeanor, he can teach someone else an important lesson in life. Yeah…that ultimately you want to win at any cost!
You can make your own conclusions but at the end… there is no other lesson to learn but fair play. By promoting fair play we promote sportsmanship and ethical values. Playing sports may teach us to win but it also teach us to accept defeat with dignity, respect the rules of the game and respect our opponents and teammates... and most important…to have fun. What a bunch of half-wits!
I said enough.
In attendance today: Matt, Nelson, Jeff, Kenny, Artie, Russ, Erwin, Dom, Joe 21, Luis, Juan, Little Joe, Big Joe, Lawman Matt and the writer.

Elks take twin bill 11-10, 15-1
By Maurice Novelle
On a chilly and breezy morning the Elks won both games of today’s double-header. Game one was a competitive affair till the last pitch. Game two in contrast was a humiliating event for the M-Picks, probably, if not, the worst game ever played by a team in WP Softball history…a truly embarrassing defeat indeed! The M-Picks were lethargic, dreary and bloodless; the Elks were the utter antithesis, full of life and dynamic. The winner pitchers were Jeff and Rob.
In attendance today: Matt. Rob, Jeff, Nelson, Kenny, Artie, Erwin, Luis, Joe 21, Pat, Big Joe, Lawman Matt, newcomer Tom, Little Joe and the writer.
Weather permitting, see you guys next week!

M-Picks sack and pillage Elks
By Maurice Novelle
As our softball season winds down and the cold weather finally creeps up on us, today Mother Nature indulged us with probably one of the few remaining summery Sundays of the year.
Our games were delayed by the annual canis familiaris athletic event and we were forced to carry out our batting practice session in an adjacent field. To Pat’s dismay today’s games didn’t end up in another split, the M-Picks squad literally and categorically defeated the Elks with lopsided victories, 9-1, the opener and 17-5, the night cap. I’m not even taking into consideration the third game that was forfeited after only two innings.
The player of the game was Danny who made two spectacular running catches in center field, just two outstanding plays! In contrast Russ didn’t have a really good day defensively but Rob’s day was a major calamity. Hey, great hitting by Joe 21 and Tommy!
On other notes, our best wishes to newcomer Victor who suffered a minor hamstring injury…It was nice to see Lawman Matt back in action. Happy Columbus Day and …viva la raza!
In attendance Rob, Matt, Juan, Pat, Lawman Matt, Monchy, Roly, Victor, Erwin, Tommy, Joe 21, Bald Mike, Jeff, Luis, Danny, Artie, Alec, Russ and the writer.

Another twin bill split
By Maurice Novelle
It’s a shame that a sporadic drizzle could deter the populace from making it to the field today to play ball. And despite the recent wet weather the field was actually in great playing condition. In any event fourteen diehards made act of presence today and we played a double-header that ended up, no surprise, with a split.
The M-Picks took the opener 9-5 and the Elks captained by Little Joe, due to Erwin’s no show, won the night cap 4-2. I’m getting ready to watch the Mets game so that’s all for today folks. See you next week!
In attendance were: Big Mouth Rob, Bald Mike, Flame Thrower Juan, Reliable Kenny, Fleet Footed Jonah, Flurry Alec, Little Joe, Mighty Joe 21, No-spam Matt, Big Joe, Frozen Rope Danny, Flash Felix, Lucky Strike Artie and your humble servant.

Elks split twin bill with M-Picks again
By Maurice Novelle
And once again Rob delivered a thrilling clutch performance with his bat by catapulting a bombastic shot over Luis head in right field to secure game two 7-4 victory for Elks in today’s double-header. And once again Mister Belly-Whopper Pat, playing center field, put on a phantasmagoric show headlong leaping for any fly ball that hovered nearby his reach, dramatized by his screechy foghorn groan.
Game one was an easy 11-3 win for the M-Picks that were the superior team. Great pitching by both ace hurlers, Jeff and Big Joe, who never lost their composure despite being squeezed by the acting umpires that seemed to have a compressed strike zone, well… except for Juan who called me out on an eye level height pitch.
In attendance today Pat, Bald Mike, Jeff, Rob, Danny, Felix, Little Joe, Roly, Erwin, Tommy, Luis, Yakir, Joe 21, Matt, Big Joe, Angelo, Nelson, Kenny, Juan, Artie and the writer. See you guys next week!

Elks split doubleheader with M-Picks
By Maurice Novelle
In the opener the M-Picks topped the Elks 6-3. Despite a throwing error that allowed two unearned runs and tainted Jeff’s masterful pitching performance, the player of the game was Rob who drove six runs with two triples and a three-run dinger.
In the nightcap the Elks capitalized on a couple of errors by the M-Picks solid infield to rally from behind, score four runs and walk away with a surprising 5-4 victory.
We witnessed a pair of outstanding defensive plays in the outfield by Nelson and Kenny but Pat’s acrobatic catch in centerfield, hot-dogging aside, was top-notch and resembled --not fun intended-- a clown balance circus performer diving into a bogus fish pond made out of papier-mâché.
Kudos to Tommy who has become a hitting machine!
In attendance today Joe 21, Pat, Juan, Big Joe, OD, Kenny, Felix, Russ, Erwin, Tommy, Matt, Luis, Jeff, Rob, Nelson, Little Joe, Alec, Roly, Artie and the writer.
See you guys next week and please don’t forget to bring some dough for next year field’s permit. Much obliged!

No show after storm
By Maurice Novelle
After Saturday night heavy rains and high winds, tropical storm Hanna exited New York and on Sunday morning the sun popped into a clear blue sky conferring a perfect day to play ball. The field was also in impeccable condition thanks to Alec's hard work who took it upon himself to stop by in the wee hours of the morning to rake the puddles. I wonder what could have induced him to do so. Cockcrow grounds keeping certainly appears a bit perplexing to me.
In any event, following batting practice, due to an unusual low turnout (where were you guys?) we were forced to do a three-team round robin tourney and we had a great time indeed. Danny’s team won 6-5-4 after eleven strenuous innings.
In attendance today: Russ, Big Joe, Danny, Felix, Artie, Matt, Alec, Little Joe, Joe 21, Jonah and the writer.
See you guys, next week!

Reported by Bill himself
WPSoftball.com reports (Fantasy) Bill was finally placed on the 15-Day DL with a sprained right finger, after trying to play through an injury sustained back on August 18th, when Bill said he “heard something pop” catching a shallow pop fly. It turns out that Bill is going to need surgery to repair his hand injury, which is actually a tendon problem. This most likely means that Bill is done for the year, as there is a 6 – 8 week recovery period. However, some speculate that there still does remain a chance that Fantasy could return before the end of the WP league’s unusually long season.

Reported by Jeff
The only controversy this week is how Maurice and Erwin figure out who gets credit for the sweep.
But the big story is Double-DH Tommy, who collected several hits and a couple of RBI's this week. Jonah made a fabulous juggling catch, finally snatching the ball bare-handed, flat on his back. But Big Joe was quick to note the rest of his Cardinals Defense more closely resembled the Olympic volleyball team practicing their sets. For Jeff's Yanks, Joe21 made the most of his opportunities at 3rd , doubling up the speedy "I never get doubled up" Felix (jinx, jinx, jinx!). OD continued to show off his athletic abilities in centerfield, with some head-scratching plays - his opponents were saying "How'd he do that?" ( while some of his teammates were saying "Why'd he do that?" ).
Game 1 was pretty much a blow out with the Yanks scoring early and often (final score 12-3?), and Jeff taking the win.
Game 2 was a more closely played with Little Joe on the mound for the Yanks, who ultimately pulled away. Louis returned for the first time this year and showed off his lefty power with a homer. Little Joe battled through an Aaron Heilman moment
walking some batters but in the end he silenced the late Cardinals rally. Final score 9-5(?)

Today's recap: Due to time constraints I will make it brief, Jeff's Team won, Big Joe's Team lost!!! Combined score, we lost track after the 12th run...in both games! Winning pitchers: Jeff game 1, Lil' Joe game 2, losing pitchers: Big Joe.

Twin bill split with outstanding circus catch
By Maurice Novelle
Game one was plagued by errors, Juan couldn’t find the strike zone and the Elks won easily 13-6. Game two was the direct opposite, a well played and close game. The M-Picks prevailed 4-1 in extra innings, Big Joe pitched lights out and we witnessed one of the best defensive plays ever, a dazzling over the shoulder catch behind first base by second baseman Doug that garnered a righteous outstanding ovation from the crowd. What a great catch!
We also witnessed a terrific throw from right fielder Rob to gun down lackadaisical Pat at first base who failed to remember, among other things, the purpose of the safety bag while plowing down the writer during the process. Just a quick refreshing course Pasquale… the orange portion of the bag is located in foul territory and is what the baserunner steps on when running towards first base; the white portion is used by the first baseman. Got it!
Next week we’ll begin collecting for 2009 field’s permit so those of you who haven’t done so yet please bring in twenty-five bucks, or cash, which is almost as good as money… as Yogi would say.
In attendance today: Joe 21, Pat, Mike II, Jeff, Felix, Danny. Doug, Jonah, Scott, Russ, Little Joe, Erwin, Tommy, Matt, Nelson, Rob, OD, Juan, Angelo, Kenny, Alec, Big Joe, Artie, Roly and the writer.

Triple header sweep by M-Picks
By Maurice Novelle
The M-Picks captured today three six-inning game victories winning by scores 5-1, 5-0 and 9-8. This is the first triplet sweep ever in WP Softball history and it wasn’t divine intervention, it was the fruition of another impressive performance by the “Big Cat” Joe 21 who played flawless shortstop instead of third base, his usual position, and made some spectacular defensive plays. “El Gato Grande” not only flashed the leather but also contributed with his bat driving in several runs and hitting a couple of bombs as well. Joe was definitely today’s MVP despite the solid pitching performances by ace hurlers Jeff, Big Joe and Little Joe. Sorry Jeter... but Joe has the edge!
In games one and two the Elks looked inanimate and the M-Picks won easily. Game three started in similar fashion but the Elks being down 9-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning rallied back scoring seven runs thanks to timely hitting by Angelo and Felix plus a pair of long drives by Fantasy Bill. The Elks added another run in the sixth to make it interesting but came up short. Great game indeed!
In attendance today: Matt, Angelo, Juan, Rob, Felix, Danny, Doug, Artie, Dave, Russ, Erwin, Billy, Bald Mike, Joe 21, Jeff, Nelson, OD, Kenny, Alec, Big Joe, Little Joe and the writer.

Another split effort
By Maurice Novelle
Due to time constraints, today’s report will be brief. The M-Picks won the opener 9-7 in extra innings and the Elks prevailed 5-4 in the nightcap.
After a long hiatus… we were glad to see Domenic again! The player of the game was O.D. who hit a long homer and played outstanding defense. Newcomer Steven also flashed some leather making a couple of outstanding running catches in right field.
There were three noteworthy plays at home plate. In the first one O.D. made an outstanding throw from center field to get the runner out, in the second one Billy got barely tagged out, and in the third one Scott and O.D. arrived at the same time to score. Also Pasquale being Pasquale –stealing Little Joe’s line- had one of his mental lapses in the base path and got tagged out trying to advance to third, a real bonehead play!
In attendance today: Little Joe, Nelson, Rob, Kenny, Doug, Jay, Dave, Steven, Medium Joe, Domenic, Fantasy Bill, Joe 21, Pasquale, O.D., Danny, Scott, Alec, Pei, Juan, Junior, Big Joe and the writer.
See you guys in a couple of weeks!

Recap of the rain drenched game
By Joe Kuceluk
Little Joe and Big Joe chose sides. Little Joe team scored 7 runs in an error plagued inning that decided the game. They scored only two runs after that in a rain shorthen 5 inning game while Big Joe's team tallied 5 runs. Big Joe took the loss and Juan pitched the winning game. We had a delay in the early part of the game due to the heavy rain. When the heavy rain came again in the 5th inning, we called the game.
Little Joe's Team: Doug, Mike, Juan, Jay, Dave, Danny, Alex, Billy and Matt K.
Big Joe's team: Jonah, Felix, Joe21, Artie, OD, Kenny, Matt, Middle Joe, Matt C.
I think we have too many Joes and Matts.
Rainout on the horizon
By Maurice Novelle
When I woke up this morning it was pouring. I checked the weather forecast online and it didn’t look good, heavy rain and thunderstorms, so I decided the prudent and judicious thing was to call the game off. I guess I was right afterwards.

M-Picks win 13-2 scorcher
By Maurice Novelle
Last week we had our first barbecue ever and according to the guys it was a smash [read Erwin’s writeup]. Today no barbecue was scheduled but it was so oppressive hot that it felt like stepping on hot coals or glowing embers. We were literally sweating bullets out there in the field!
From the get-go, after a series of defensive miscues, the Elks jumped on board quickly with two unearned runs but the potent M-Picks squad never abdicated. They bounced back and displayed more refined pitching as well as timely hitting. The big bat today was Rob who put a charge on a ball with the bases juiced for a clearing homer. The defensive play of the game, after dropping an easy pop up behind first base, was Roly’s unorthodox catlike spinning move to tag the runner heading to second and throw to first to turn an inning ending double play.
In attendance today Little Joe, Rob, Pat, Juan, Doug, Dave, Roly, Arty, Tommy, Joe 21, Fantasy Bill, Danny, Kenny, Alec, Scott and the writer. Also Peter, Felix and Matt stopped by.

A great time was had at today's BBQ
By Erwin Kessler
Congrats to Big Joe for organizing and spearheading this first, I hope of many, event. The game today matched two great pitchers and as usual Big Joe came out the losing side; it must be the umpiring and the fielding.
The Elks won today's contest 6-4 in an unusually long six inning game. The highlight for the M-Picks was me being thrown out at first from short left center by Kenny after I had stroked one of Big Joe's best pitches for what should had been a clean hit.
It was also great seeing Lawman Matt back from a recent illness, and Jeff's umpiring today was flawless but we all forgot to sign his cast.
I welcome any of today's participants to give their version of today's game. If you weren't there please feel free to make up any story they would prefer.
The Elks were represented by Juan, Russell, Bald Mike, Odalis, Artie, Billy, Felix, Lawman Matt, and myself.
The M-Picks without their (our) leader fielded Big Joe, Nelson, Dave, Jay, Joe 21, Kenny, Matt, Alec, Doug and Little Joe.
See u all next week!

Elks win 2 out of 3
By Maurice Novelle
Under overcast skies, the Elks won games two and three of today’s Independence Day weekend triplet bill 6-1, 5-2 and were blanked in the opener 8-0.
In game one, a seven inning affair, the M-Picks were the better team; in a nutshell, they had better pitching, better fielding and better hitting. The writer was the winning pitcher and he relied on terrific fielding by gold gloves Joe 21 at third, Fantasy Bill at short and Nelson at first. Also outfielders Bald Mike, Artie and Kenny were outstanding defensively. Today’s MVP was Bad Boy Russ who carried the big bat and was mister clutch.
For the Elks Felix pitched brilliantly defeating the writer in game two and Juan in the night cap. Today we witnessed a few botched plays by the Elks at third base, left field and center field, but in actuality the best defensive plays were executed by their infielders. Doug at second and Mauricio at short turned two spectacular professional caliber 4-6-3 double plays in a row…a work of art, just awesome!
Next week is the big event, the barbecue organized by Salchichon Big Joe . Don’t miss it!
In attendance today Felix, Matt, Rob, Pat, Danny, Doug, Mauricio, Medium Joe, Andre, O.D., Bald Mike, Fantasy Bill, George, Joe 21, Nelson, Kenny, Artie, Roly, Russ, Juan, Alec, Big Joe and yours truly.

Dad and Son Magic Spell: M-Picks win both games!
By Maurice Novelle
For a while it had all the earmarks of Sherlock Holmes and the case of the missing ball, but in actuality the puzzling question was not how to retrieve the ball stuck in the tree but to find out if Artie’s prediction would turn true again. After checking today's lineups Artie with a big smile on his face said “Hey Mo…you’re winning both games today!” For some mysterious reason, I found out, every time Artie and his son Mauricio play together, that team always wins both games of the doubleheader. Wow, isn’t that odd?
In game 2 when the Elks were ahead by five runs and cruising along, I for sure thought that fate had taken another course but the M-Picks magically rallied to win the nightcap 10-9. This is the first time that the same team has two dad-and-son tandems with Kenny and Doug also playing for the M-Picks today.
Game 1 was a batting practice session for the M-Picks. It was an easy 16-3 slugfest victory with Rob putting on a show with a couple of bombs to dead center. Flash Felix is still tracking down the first blast.
Defensively, great rely by Bald Mike to Doug in right field to nail Jack at home plate and rob him of a deserving opposite field homer. It was a bang-bang play. Russ trying to impersonate Reyes on the base path went bezirk and was also nailed at home plate; well actually he was retrieving to third base. Also Fantasy Bill flashed some leather at short and made a couple of outstanding plays. Today’s winning pitchers were Little Joe, with another terrific performance, and yours truly who struggled a bit on the mound, defeating Big Joe and Juan respectively.
On a separate note, we wish Jeff who is nursing a broken arm a quick recovery. Erwin needs you!
In attendance today Matt, Billy, Big Joe, Nelson, Danny, Felix, Roly, Jack, Erwin, Juan, O.D., Bald Mike, Rob, Little Joe, Mauricio, Kenny, Doug, Artie, Russ, Dave, Alec and the writer.

Slugfest Act!
By Maurice Novelle
The Elks split twin bill with rival M-Picks, dropping the opener 18-10 and coming back to win the night cap 10-4.
The soaring score exhibited in both games was more a product of poor fielding and inadequate pitching than praiseworthy hitting; with the exception of Medium Joe’s blast. What a bomb!
Without a doubt Nelson, Billy and Matt played flawless outfield and made some terrific catches, but the defensive play of the game goes to Felix who made a brilliant running catch in right field. Just awesome…Flash Felix!
As you are aware, Big Joe is organizing an Emeril-style barbecue after the game on July 13. I have a previous engagement that day so I won’t be able to make it. Jeppers! I’m gonna miss the Bubba burgers and Premio sausages. Please contact "Bang" Joe at joecoach320@yahoo.com for details.
In attendance today Bald Mike, Nelson, Big Joe, Kenny, Doug, Dave, Jason, Russell, Artie, Medium Joe, Erwin, Matt, Fantasy Bill, Jeff, Rob, Mauricio, Little Joe, Roly, Alec, Jack, O.D., Felix and the writer.

Jeff wins two for the Elks
By Maurice Novelle
As it is customary when their vociferous leader is elsewhere… the Elks win. And today without the presence of their “manos the piedra” first baseman, as to say who needs you Erwin, the Elks won again and took both ends of today’s twin bill Father’s Day extravaganza 7-2 and 11-8 respectively.
After a laborious groundskeeping effort to get rid of the big puddle around second base and prepare the field for playing condition, we skipped batting practice and carried on with the game.
In the opener the Elks won easily without any resistance. Jeff pitched great and Russ at first resembled Keith Hernandez with some outstanding foot work.
In game two, Juan having problems locating the strike zone, walked the bases loaded and surrendered the first grand slam of the season to Jay to put the M-Picks ahead 6-0. What a blast!
Your humble servant, a junkballer, was the opposing pitcher… and cruising along with my Eephus pitch and relying on some outstanding defense behind me, a great stabbing stop at third by Dave and two brilliant running catches by centerfielder Matt. But in the bottom of the fourth with two men out and the bases empty, the Elks capitalize on a couple of defensive miscues and score five unearned runs. That would be the turning point the game and switch the momentum in favor of the Elks. Danny would the catalyst with his clutch hitting. Jeff who relieved Juan would be the winner pitcher.
In attendance today: Matt, Nelson, Jay, Dave, Mauricio, Maurice, Artie, Big Joe, Scott, Yakir, Odali, Dan, Doug, Billy, Kenny, Joe, Russ, Alec, Little Joe, Juan and Jeff.

Twin Bill Scorcher!
By Maurice Novelle
With the arrival of the first heat wave of the summer we were delighted by the presence of our last year’s MVP. Glad to have you back Mailman Nelson! Today’s games were not the personification of graceful defensive skills or finesse, on the contrary, well… with the exception of Matt who made a couple of awesome running catches in center field.
In game one, the M-Picks were victimized by a series of infield errors, but aside from any defensive mishaps, pitching sensation Little Joe electrified the crowd with his brilliant performance to blank the potent M-Picks squad 9-0. Let me go further…best pitching performance of the year so far.
In game two, in an exciting finish, the M-Picks capitalized on a couple of infield errors and a Texas leaguer by Nelson to rally and score four runs. “Marianito” Pasquale closed the deal with his first save of the season to seal the M-Picks victory, 6-5. Great game!
Just a final note…Throughout our years of existence WP Softball has strived to create an atmosphere for team play which fosters respect for the individual and the game. Our main goal has been sportsmanship, camaraderie and, first and foremost, to have fun. Players who are not prepared to sacrifice their egos for the benefit of the team are not welcomed. No prima donnas please!
In attendance today: Bald Mike, Mike, Jeff, Doug, Roly, Dave, Artie, Eric, Erwin, Little Joe, Pat, Matt, Nelson, Felix, Kenny, Scott, Mauricio, Jason, Joe, Russell and Maurice.

Elks have impressive victory
By Maurice Novelle
Due to time constraints today’s report will be brief. Down two runs in the top of the sixth, the Elks rally to beat the M-Picks in extra innings 9-4. The defensive play of the game was Dave’s outstanding circus catch behind first base. Second baseman Roly turned a graceful 4-6-3 inning ending double play and Felix made a nice running catch in right field on a long fly ball off Bald Mike’s bat.
In attendance today: Erwin, Roly, Pasquale. Joe 21, Kenny, Doug, Felix, Jeff, Big Joe, Dave, Bald Mike, Little Joe, Artie, Matt, Alec, Juan and the writer who arrived late due to an accident that forced the closing of the Southern State Parkway.

Twin-bill Jeff’s gem
By Maurice Novelle
On a day that is meant to represent more than just the start of the summer, we pause to honor and salute those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We humbly offer them our gratitude and our prayers.
Reporting live from the Nature Center quarters our special correspondent Joe Kuceluk inform us that the chances of playing a game this Monday morning are slim to none and the only fly balls he’ll probably be chasing are the ones bound for the canine kinfolks that gather around our majestic greensward. Thank you Big Pooch, I mean…Big Joe for your last minute report.
On Sunday we had a great turnout and the jam-packed WP squads negotiated another split doubleheader. Game one was a gem, a clash of titans...a great pitching performance by aces Juan and Jeff. In the top of the seventh the Elks managed to scratch two runs to send the game into extra innings but newcomer Mike, the player of game, would drive the winning run in the bottom of the eight with a frozen rope to right to seal the M-Picks victory, 5-4.
In game two, kudos to Jeff who was lights out on the mound. He showed excellent command of his pitches and a nasty knuckle floater. The Elks won easily blanking the lackluster M-Picks 7-0.
In attendance: Fantasy Bill, Arian, Jeff, Danny, Kenny, Roly, Artie, Jack, George, Felix, Erwin, Joe 21, Matt, Juan, Mike, Jason, Jonah, Big Joe, Doug, Alec and yours truly.

M-Picks win twin bill 7-4, 2-1
By Maurice Novelle
We didn’t participate in the annual Queens Biathlon but as it is customarily when this event takes place, access to the parking field was not permitted so we were forced to pack our gear and take the long route to our beloved sports venue.
After the grueling walk and a few batting practice swings we played a pair of abbreviated games. The Elks, despite the formidable presence of ace pitcher Juan, couldn’t stop the potent M-Picks squad lead by Matt who had a terrific day at the plate. Matt also made a couple of outstanding running catches in center field and was the player of the game.
The defensive play of the game was Artie’s unbelievable circus catch in left field by the green monster. Artie also made the running blunder of the day alike Reyes trying to get to third base, and Scott distinguished himself with the comical play of the game beating Big Joe to the bag and then tripping over it. That was really funny!
In attendance today were Pat, Roly, Juan, Matt IV, Big Joe, Russell, Pete, Erwin, Matt, Rob, Jeff, Scott, Alec, Little Joe, Alec, Little Joe, Artie, a newcomer girl...I believe her name was "Charlene" (probably misspelled) and the writer.

A split only a mother could love!
By Mitch Weingart
Thirty....yes!, thirty was the total number of runs scored in today's Mother's Day twin bill held under sunny skies and pleasant temperatures. However, soaring gas prices and the deepening recession cut into our usual robust turnout. Eventually about sixteen players showed up and we had a pretty good time of it. [Not counting four late arrivals]
"Sloppy seconds"...usually not a softball term, but due to Friday's rains, we were faced with a large puddle by second base that needed work...and thanks to Kenny's run for gardening tools of mass destruction, we were able to restore the field to a semi-decent condition, and the games began shortly thereafter.
The first contest featured some of the outstanding diving defensive plays by Pasquale that we've come to expect, no matter what position he plays... Pat was also shining with his bat...hitting a three run triple during a decisive second inning, as the M-Picks took advantage of a rare error by the usually sure-handed Artie and jumped out to a seven run lead. Of course, no cushion is safe for pushin' and sure enough, even with Big Joe pitching his heart out....the Elks managed to crawl their way back and make a contest of it. Juan's amazing double play throw from the outfield to first base was the closer of game one. This was the third of three double plays that the M-picks turned in the opener, clearly the difference in this game, as they prevailed 10-5.
Felix gave us all a scare today, dislocating his shoulder reaching for a bad hop ball. Evidently this is a hobby of his, and after a half hour or so he was back on the field as if nothing had happened.... Me? I'd still be at Long Island Jewish... right now...no matter what time yer reading this report!!
Game two was a complete reversal in scoring as the Elks dominated at the plate and were never threatened in a 12-3 wipeout of the seemingly hapless M-Picks. Defensive miscues lead to some large innings, as the Elks pounced all over Big Joe and Jeff held the M-Picks in check on the opposite end. By the time the fourth inning rolled around, even Hillary would have called it a day... I dropped an easy toss from Joe 21 that opened up the flood gates...and Little Joe had an adventurous time in center field to say the least!!
Big day today for Jonah who's blazing speed around the bases was fun for both sides to watch. His one hop blast to me at second would have dislocated my testicles had I not stuck leather in front of my crotch a split second before impact......and I seriously doubt that any of my teammates would have volunteered to help pop them back into place....
The second game ended shortly after 11:00 and we were on our way to join our families to enjoy a fabulous Mother's Day. Hey, my band has gigs these next two weeks and I won't be here for a few....so, I got two words for ya.... Play Nice!!

Happy Mother’s Day! In attendance today were Matt, Felix, Jeff, Kenny, Artie, Jack, George, Erwin, Danny, Jonah, Joe 21, Pat, Matt IV, Scott, Little Joe, Big Joe, Mitch, Juan, Alec and the writer.
Felix’s caustic interlude was reminiscent of Mel Gibson’s Lethal Weapon 2 inspiring scene when Riggs intentionally dislocates his shoulder to escape from a straight-jacket for a bet. Now…that’s a popup!

Not a raindrop in sight!
By Maurice Novelle
In Pat’s own words, what a waste! ...but the weather forecast somehow dissuaded some of our fellow sportsmen from making it to the field today. We were a bit short-handed to play a game however we had a great two-hour workout. Joe 21 put on a show during batting practice; he literally ripped the cover off the ball.
In attendance today were diehards Big Joe, Kenny, Little Joe, Jeff, Dave, Pat, Artie, Joe 21 and the writer.
Next week it’s Mother’s Day so please be at the field on time, no later than 8:30 a.m. Everyone has to leave early. We’ll probably play a single nine-inning game or two abbreviated ones.
Also, in the future we will adhere to and implement the following rainout policy: in the event our game is cancelled due to rain or inclement weather conditions a notice will be posted to this page by 8:00 a.m. the same day of the game... Okey-dokey gentlemen!

Up in Arms!
By Maurice Novelle
It didn’t get to bloodshed but opening day turned out to be a clash of warriors rather than a friendly spirited sporting event.
In game one, a legitimate play that warranted no arguments whatsoever enraged a few of the Elks contingent when Felix, the runner at second, was caught napping off the base and got tagged out … no hidden ball trick here my friends; and the player by his own admission said he assumed but never requested a time-out… End of story!
Aside from the verbal altercations, both games were fairly competitive and well played. Big Joe and Jeff pitched lights out, Joe 21 made some outstanding catlike plays at third, Skin-tight-Roma-shirt Pat amused the crowd as always with his showboating skills and even dropped an easy popup. How about that!
At the end, the teams split another doubleheader, the M-Picks win game one 3-2 and the Elks take the nightcap 6-2.
Great turnout! In attendance today were Roly, Matt, Pat, Jeff, Kenny, Felix, Little Joe, Dave, newcomers Walter and Evan, Bald Mike, Joe 21, Fantasy Bill, Rob, Big Joe, Danny, Alec, Artie, Russ, Scott, Pete and Maurice.

M-picks take first game of season 15-8 at Shiti Field
by Mitch Weingart
Jeff and Big Joe squared off in today's long anticipated opener....a typical Windsor Park defensive gem...that is, if you buy your gems at, uh...Kmart!! Clearly, the field has not quite recovered from the NASCAR MONSTER TRUCK RALLY that was held in center field just a few weeks ago...and the 15" wide tire treads that gouged the field, like craters on the moon, must have somehow missed the careful inspection of the NYC Parks Dept, who are clearly more concerned with where we choose to tinkle this year.
The game got off to an exciting start, as Bald Mike slid home safely in a close play, as the Elks got under way to an early but short lived lead... That's a great uniform he's got...and I can't wait till Limp Dick and Harry Ass show up with their jerseys!!
Today's contest featured some blasts; especially, that monster shot by newcomer Roly, who hit one so far, Hillary might thought she was coming under fire again!!
...He was effective on both ends of the field today, with an unassisted double play at first base, much to the chagrin of Big Joe, who had already hustled ten feet down the line.... For a guy who claims he hadn't played in over three years, he's got the jump on this season's MVP award. Unless Nelson brings a bag of peanuts next Sunday....then I'll switch my vote back to the Mailman!!
Matt also had a good day at the plate....with a few hits and an opposite field home run...after being surprised by my double that went over his head earlier that inning...believe it, nobody was more surprised than me!!
Artie was in great form in right field....robbing me of an extra base hit...and catching everything else that came close. He also had a nice day at the plate...
The game was relatively close, until a bunch a badly played balls by the Elks, led to an inning so bad that even Eliot Spitzer had to leave for a second time this year....and the game was effectively over from that point on....
We'd like to remind everybody that it takes cash to keep our little game thriving...those tire marks don't come cheap....especially with the price of gas nowadays.....and that carefully groomed infield...needs your money to keep those bad hops coming..... While the price of everything continues to rise, Windsor Park softball is still a bargain at 25 bucks for the season... I had to leave after the first game, otherwise I'd be writing a bunch of more nonsense about whatever went on afterwards...but, it was great to see everybody again...and we're off to a great start....

Get ready for season opener next week!
In attendance today were Luis, Matt IV, Big Joe, Dave, Felix, Bald Mike, Mitch, Little Joe, Matt, Rob, Artie, Russ, Jeff, Kenny, Roly, Fantasy Bill and yours truly. At the end of today’s game we proceeded to play a three-inning twelve-player round robin to make sure everyone that showed up for practice left dead tired. Aches and pain galore! Don’t worry Erwin... this game doesn’t count…the season opener is next week; anyhow you’ll need to improve on last year’s 22-30 record.
Batting practice next week begins at 8:30 a.m.… be on time guys! Cheerio!

Are you ready to play ball!
by Maurice Novelle
Springtime is here and opening day is just around the corner. 2008 is bound to be a great and exciting season indeed, and by the way, you Yankee instigators, I’m not alluding to my Amazing Mets as you might ponder but to our softball season.
This past Tuesday, the Queens Special Events & Permit Office hosted its annual meeting for field permit holders. I attended the function. It was held at the NYC Parks & Recreation headquarters, The Overlook in Kew Gardens. Incidentally they are in the process of moving their offices right now to a new location, the Passerelle Building in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
Several topics were discussed at the meeting and it was overstressed that all governing rules and regulations and guidelines will be strictly enforced this coming year. Well, let me put it in a nutshell… No alcoholic beverage drinking, no barbecuing, no littering and no public urination.
They also talked about field maintenance and do’s and don’ts [see table below]. They are planning to have all fields ready by April 13 and they will be purposely leaving piles of clay at every ballfield so they can be prepared accordingly before playing.
At the conclusion of the meeting...good news!... our permit was ready for pickup. Opening day is Sunday, April 27, but we can have a couple of practice sessions beforehand.
Happy Easter guys!
QUEENS BALLFIELDS DO'S AND DONT'S
Clean up after yourselves - Don't leave a mess. Remember that you share the fields. Please be considerate of others. Bring plastic garbage bags for all your garbage. Leave bags behind the dugout for Parks to clear.
Use a flat shovel to scoop puddles out of the baselines and all clay areas. Spoon water into a bucket; and spill on grassy area off the field. Do not use a broom to sweep puddles. Prepare the field properly by using a shovel and arrive early on inclement weather.
Use an iron rake to level off area around home plate and other depressed area along baselines when you are done playing. In bad weather the field may be too wet to play on. You may have to cancel game to keep field from getting damaged. [A red flag system may be implemented]
