It's Party Time! Just before the arrival of the second snowstorm of the season and with slush piles from last week wintry blast still rimming the WP complex walkways, we held our third annual party. We missed last year Joe Garciaparra's mouth-watering tiramisu and Tommy's bon vivant stuffed shells but Erwin's assortment of olives and cheeses with that brick-oven old fashioned bread as well as Big Joe's Kielbasa and Sauerkraut were just ambrosial.
We would like to thank Sam for sending the pizza pie, although the Pizza Hut delivery guy refused to leave it without paying again for it. What was the catch Sam? Marty sent us an email that he couldn't make this year because it was his birthday. Happy birthday Marty! Also our advocates Gail and Marty Grayson from Mid-Queens Fresh Meadows Sports Alliance were celebrating their thirty-year wedding anniversary. Happy anniversary couple! We got emails from Gary, Apache John and Diesel wishing us happy and healthy holidays. Likewise guys! Last but not least, we would like to express our thanks to Cheryl for going always out of her way and make this party possible every year.
On other notes, and this might be of interest to Russell, we were informed by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society that they will be holding their 9th Annual Snowball Softball Tournament on February 7, 2004. This is an exciting event complete with food, beverages and prizes. They are now in the process of recruiting men's and co-ed teams, as well as sponsors. For more information, you can contact Diandra at 914-949-0084 or email her at kodld@lls.org.
We have also toyed with the idea of setting some kind of sports activity for the winter. Everyone seems interested in bowling so I have posted a poll. Let's see the outcome!

Old Man Winter comes calling: WP bats were finally silenced by Mother Nature. Winter does not officially begin until Dec. 22, but today's snowfall marks the end of our softball season. Time to pack it up guys!
As we wrap our seventh year of existence, thanks to all who attended. We hope you had a wonderful time, enjoyed the camaraderie, and we look forward to seeing you again next year.
Once again, don't forget to join us for our third annual party.

So...where was everyone? Please spare me the details and don't blame today's low attendance on the weather. Yes, it was somewhat chilly but not that cold. Anyhow, a genuine softball player is always eager and ready to play ball, no matter what. If not, follow the example of diehards Raul, Virgilio, Anthony, Calvin, Russell, Pedro, Joe 21 and yours truly who made to the field, didn't desist and worked out for a couple of hours. Disappointed Russell couldn't find a better expression or metonymy to describe his displeasure: what a bunch of pussies! I completely agree. Before we call it quits this year, let's give you guys a final chance. See you all next week then.
Now with regard to other matters, I contacted Cheryl and it's confirmed. Our third annual party will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2003. Time: 5:00 p.m. Location: Community Room at 75-26 Bell Blvd. So come along, bring your spouse, sweetheart or friend and children, and of course don't forget to bring food and drinks. We'll set up the tables and chairs. It is a family oriented affair. We'll have boom box to play music, big screen TV and VCR, games like ping-pong, pool, darts, cards, etc. We'll have lots of fun. Click here for directions or contact me at maurice@wpsoftball.com.

Attribute it to El Niño if you wish, but the story so far has been the pleasing warm weather that we have enjoyed lately and has allowed us to still keep playing ball this year.
Today we were a bit undermanned so we only played a couple of six-inning mixed-squads friendlies. The team captained by "loud mouth" Pasquale (meant in a jocular fashion) won the first game in convincing fashion by a score of 14-8. In game two Joe 21 "compadres" returned the favor with a 13-8 victory.
Some of the competitive spirit was curtailed due to the fact that the teams were forced to provide their own pitching. However in game one, on a sharp come backer to the mound, the writer's decision to throw to second base jump-started a fumed controversy. I still contend that in that situation that was the proper play. Today's MVP was Nicky. Great at bats and solid defense!
Also in attendance today: Big Joe, Sam, Manny, Anthony, Raul, Herman, Danny, Mitch, Russell, Apache John and yours truly. See you all next Sunday and have a healthy and happy Thanksgiving Day! Go easy with the turkey. Also I will be checking with Cheryl regarding the availability of the community room for our annual party. I'll keep you informed.

Windsor Park loses both games of double header, 11-6 and 4-3: The Red-hot Arsenals once again used timely hitting and aggressive running on the base paths to earn back-to-back doubleheader sweeps over struggling WP All Stars. The WP squad can't seem to win close games, or much of any other kind lately.
In game one the Arsenals jumped to a seven-run lead after one inning and the WP team couldn't recoup. Game two, in contrast, was a gem, a ten-inning marathon. With two men out and no one in base the WP All Stars managed to fight their way back and score two runs to send the game into extra innings, but in the bottom of the tenth after a somewhat controversial play, fleet-footed Anthony who was running for Mark would score the winning run. Even though both Gary and Nicky pitched great and deserve a lot of credit, the player of the game was Joe 21, or perhaps "Super Joe" who flashed some leather at the hot corner and made several quiet brilliant plays.
Also on attendance today: Big Joe, Russell, Sam, Virgilio, Raul, Manny, Marty, Apache John, Mitch, Calvin, Pedro, Herman, Nelson, Danny and the writer. See you all next week!
November 9, 2003
Arsenals beat WP twice and take double-header: The weather was more appropriate for ice fishing than playing softball but the nineteen or so diehards that made it to the field didn't mind permafrosting their tuchis.
According to the experts, the cold weather cuts down the distance the ball travels, however, today's frigid temperatures didn't affect in one way or the other the trajectory of Arsenals' hitters fly balls. They just pummeled the WP pitchers, if not ask leftfielder Jose. The man put on a show launching rocket after rocket, four mammoth homers, two in one inning. What a slugfest! Manny and Virgilio also shined with a pair of dingers each, and even injured Russell who could barely walk had a field day at the plate as well. At the end only one team on the field, the Arsenals, the score speaks by itself, 17-3 and 14-3.
Also on attendance today: Pedro (diving for every ball), John (played second and third well), Anthony (caught), Calvin (pitched second game), Joe 21 (made some great stops at third), Nelson, Danny (one great catch in the outfield), Big Joe, Yaquir, Doug, Kenny, Sam, Mitch, Gary and the writer (who also played for the Arsenals and pitched the first game). See you all next week!
November 02, 2003
WP takes both ends of double header. Under sunny skies and summer-like conditions Windsor Park defeats the Arsenals 14-11 and 8-7 respectively. The WP squad wrapped up the first ball game as soon as it got under way with a torrid five-run inning. From there on, they basically sailed through without major incidences or much menace by the opposition. In contrast, game two was a dandy, a battle of titans indeed. In the top of the sixth, the game was tied at 4-4. Windsor Park managed to score a couple of runs but the scrappy Arsenals didn't capitulate. They responded aggressively with three runs of their own and threatened to walk away with the victory, however, last minute heroics by Sam and Big Joe overturned the course of time.
On attendance today: Joe 21 (hit for the cycle and made a couple of brilliant plays), his brother Vinny (lots of speed and a heck of an arm), Nelson (looked more like Jason Phillips today), Sam (big hit), Big Joe (never gets tired of pitching), Russell (had some pop on his bat today), Greg (played well in center field), Mitch (impressive in left field), Virgilio (crushed a couple of balls), Manny (always an offensive threat), Raul (couple of nice plays at second), Jose (pitched great), Calvin (drove a couple of balls), Andre (great outfielder), Richie (fleet footed), Big Joe's neighbor (sorry I can't remember his name) and the writer. See you all next week!
October 26, 2003
Windsor Park drops double header to Arsenals: The Windsor Park squad dropped both ends of today's double header. They fell short 10-6 in the opener and handed away the second game 9-6. The Windsor Park defense looked clumsy at best and some of the players may have been experiencing frustration or perhaps embarrassment after yesterday's Marlins blatant obliteration of the Yankees. In contrast the Mets fans were overjoyed and thrilled. That evidently showed in the field. But aside from the frown faces, what was most striking was the scarcity of Yankee garments. I guess today wasn't the day to take pleasure in flaunting the pinstripes.
The Arsenals thoroughly dominated the offensive action in both games despite a couple of incursions by the home team and deservedly won both games. Although both victories were more the result of team effort, Pedro's pitching was outstanding.
Today in attendance were Danny, Nelson, Pasquale, Joe 21, Vinny, Russell, Ken, Yaquir, Ching, Mitch, Arsenal's Calvin, Manny, Pedro, Virgilio and the rest of the guys, and last but not least, yours truly. See you all next week.
October 19, 2003
What a slugfest: runs galore! Under a few rain sprinkles, the Windsor Park All Stars split another twinbill with the Spanish Arsenals by taking the opener 17-12 and losing the night cap 16-13. Both games were intense and electrifying but neither team displayed a marked superiority over the other one. It was sort of a roller coaster effect because of the persistent misplays and blunders.
In the first encounter, the player of the game was Ken, who kept driving run after run. In the second one, Arsenals infielder Manny deserves the honors but first baseman Virgilio and outfielder Jose "No Jodas" were also impressive with the bat.
Also in attendance today Jeff (not his day on the mound, he just got decimated), Big Joe (slow as molasses, was tagged out at third to end game two but contributed with some big hits), Sam (hit some ropes but was fatigued afterwards), Nelson (as always brilliant at first base and hit a humongous homer), Russell (snaillike around the bases but had a lively bat today), Joe 21 (hard as nails, manufactured a couple of runs and hit the long ball as well), Arsenals Jose Olivo, Calvin, Andre, and the rest of the bunch, and last but not least the writer who played solid defense and drove in a couple of runs, if I may say so. See you all next week!
October 12, 2003
Due to inclement weather conditions, today's game was canceled. This is our third rainout of the season. Let's hope the weather cooperates next Sunday. We have also decided to suspend the mystery photo feature due to poor response by the populace and time constraints by the Webmaster. With the exception of Russell, no one seemed to take an interest in it, not even Joe, its mastermind.
October 5, 2003
Windsor Park squad beats so-called Arsenals 13-0: The Windsor Park All Stars Team needed just one inning to mow down the Spanish team and score a dozen runs. It was a slugfest and today's team didn't bear a likeness to last week's contingent. After three innings of one-sided play and a shebang of defensive miscues by the visiting team, we decided to call it a game. To make it a fair and balanced contest we followed with a seven-inning mixed squads' game that resulted in an 8-5 victory for the visiting captain. The player of game was shortstop Manny who made some brilliant defensive plays and contribute with the bat as well.
Also in attendance today were Ken, Doug, Apache John, Sam (great defensive plays at second), Yaquir, Nelson, John 21, Pat (lively bat today), Russell, Gary, Big Joe, Mitch, Jeff (pitched well but run out of gas in the top of the seventh and surrendered three runs), and the writer.
Furthermore, we would like to take this opportunity and thank the ten or so visiting "peloteros" for their camaraderie. Gracias! See you all next week!
September 28, 2003
Today's game was canceled due to rain. Our Jewish friends celebrate Rosh Hashanah, a time to begin introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the past year and planning the changes to make in the new year. Hey guys, our wishes for a sweet new year, and by the way, save me some of those yummy apples dipped in honey.
September 21, 2003
Windsor Park All Stars Team beats Arsenals 4-2: Following the M-Picks disposal of the Elks by a score of 9-6, a Windsor Park all stars squad played a friendly game against the former and now dismantled Arsenals.
The Spanish league team got on board first in the top of the third inning, after a two-run dinger by their swift-footed center fielder. The game was played at a quick pace. The Arsenal's defense was solid and their pitcher was in complete command, but in the bottom of the sixth things changed. A series of flubs by their up-to-that-point flawless infield allowed Yaquir and Danny to get on base. Then Nelson stepped up to the plate and tied the game with an opposite field hit to right followed by Joe 21's gargantuan circuit clout that would add two more RBIs.
Today in attendance were Yaquir (made an unbelievable shoe-string catch), Double-play Pat (played solid defense), Nelson (Keith Hernandez's glove at first), Joe 21 (our five tool player was accompanied by his girl friend), Andrew (left early), Jeff (didn't play against the Arsenals), Sam (got robbed a couple of times), Big Joe (pitched great), Danny (really hustled today), Russell (hmm), the writer (got a couple of doubles and a homer in game one), and last but not least, our number one fan: Angela. See you all next week!
September 14, 2003
Elks lose both ends of double-header: The Elks were defeated twice by the M-Picks, losing the first game 5-4, then dropping the second one 6-0.
In the first game, both teams played well but the M-Picks managed to prevail by the minimum margin. In the second affair Mitch had a masterful pitching performance by blanking the Elks and allowing just three hits. However, the player of both games was Joe 21 who made some awesome defensive plays and contributed with the bat as well. The second game ended with a line drive caught in mid air, in Pasquale's words, "a tremendous play by the writer," undoubtedly a praise well taken from someone who had a rather forgetful day at the plate by grounding into three double-plays and barely escaping grounding into a fourth one thanks to Sam's somewhat inconspicuous glove ruse at first.
As expected, today's participation was affected by the menace of rain and the game time change, consequently a handful of attendees made it to the field that was in impeccable playing condition despite Saturday's downpour.
Also in attendance today: Russell (better known as fleet-footed Jason Phillips), newcomer Greg (hit a homer), Big Joe (had sort of a heatstroke by game two), Ching (pitched extremely well), Danny, Yaquir, and last but not least, Nelson who's been playing great first base.
September 7, 2003
Ching shines in M-Picks win over Elks: We would have to go back in time to remember such a well-played, riveting and exciting softball game like today. To be exact we would have to go back to July 21, 2002. On that occasion we played eleven innings and Mailman Nelson drove in the winning run with two men out. Today it was a female hero, "Matsui" Ching, who played just outstanding and was the player of the game.
On the top of the sixth the Elks managed to tie the game 6-6 and were threatening to score again but the M-Picks shut them down after a couple of brilliant and beautifully executed bang-bang plays. The Elks gambled and sent the runner home but Jared's strong and accurate throw from center field nailed Sam at the plate. Ching quickly placed the tag and alertly threw to third to get Big Joe by a mile and end the inning.
The M-Picks had a couple of chances to put the game away with runners on third base and no one out, but they didn't carry through. We would have to wait until the bottom of the twelfth for the grand finale; that's when Ching would drive in the winning run, an opposite field frozen rope over the head of Nelson and beyond the reach of Mitch. Theeeeeeeeee M-Picks WIN! The final score was 7-6. What a great game!
Also in attendance: Andrew, Andre, Apache John, Kenny, Russell, Garry, Jeff, Danny, Fantasy Bill, Yaquir, Marty, Joe 21 and the writer.
Remember the new game time. See you all next week at 11:00 AM.
August 31, 2003
M-picks and Elks split double-header: M-Picks won the opener 7-5 and the Elks, without his injured captain, Erwin, bounced back to take the nightcap by a copious 21-7 score.
In the first game Ray Diesel had a dazzling performance. He hit a pair of inside-the-park homers and drove in five runs, but the player of the game, the true catalyst, was George who got on base consistently and perplexed the Elks defense with his heads up base running.
Game two, not as praiseworthy as game one, turned out to be a memorable event. Lawman Matt, unable to play, called balls and strikes and umpired the first game ever in Windsor Park Softball's history. The M-Picks got on board quickly. On their first at bat, they scored six runs and the Elks seemed doomed to another imminent defeat but Jeff regained his composure on the mound and pitched brilliantly the rest of the way.
Meanwhile the M-Picks defense swiftly collapsed and the Elks cashed in on the hubbub. Aside from Mitch's legitimate looper over George's head, quite a few of Elks hits were more or less catchable balls that were misjudged by a daunted and indeed atrocious outfield. However, the infield for both teams played relatively flawless ball and turned a couple of first-rate double-plays.
Also in attendance today: Jared (Murphy's Law in practice), Apache John, Mailman Nelson, Pete, Frank (pulled a hammy), Sam (pitched great first game and tweaked calf again), Ching, Joe 21, Danny, Fantasy Bill, Barry, Russell, Andrew, Boz, Kenny, Big Joe (also pitched great and made a couple of nice catches in the outfield), Andre, and the writer.
Happy Labor Day weekend everyone! With regard to the new field permit, as soon as I hear from Gail I will e-mail you.
August 24, 2003
It's Mitch time!
Number seven is believed to bring good luck, hence the famous gambler's term "lucky seven". The Elks managed to score seven runs on each game of today's double-header nevertheless ended up losing to the M-Picks 14-7 and 10-7 respectively. On the other hand, number thirteen usually associated with misfortune didn't seem to trouble Mitch who was sporting his Mets Alfonzo T-shirt and had the performance of his life. He not only got eight consecutive hits and threatened to break Kenny's record, but had the compiled charm of a Buster Keaton and a Jackie Chang as he scuttled around the bases.
Also in attendance today: Nelson (got two dingers), Dave, Mitch, Big Joe, Jeff, Garry, Andrew, Barry, Sam, Joe 21 (flashed some leather), Freddy, Kenny, Boz, Frank, Danny, Russell and his nephew, Erwin, and the writer.
As you know, our present field permit did expire today. I spoke to Gail last week and she informed me that the new permit should arrive shortly. As soon as I get it, I will e-mail everyone and let you know of any changes. Please stay tuned!
August 17, 2003
Just before game time, a brisk drizzle made its way and moistened the playing field, but the threat of further precipitations quickly dissipated as the sun blazed through the sky. Today after arduous consideration we implemented a new player selection method to balance team forces. The idea is to prevent lopsided teams, talent-wise, and make the game more enjoyable for everyone. I believe that we still need to work on it. Any suggestions regarding this matter will be welcomed.
Now with regard to today's double-header, the M-picks routed the Elks 13-7 in the first game before falling 10-7 in the nightcap. Defensively both games were awful and except for Freddy, Fantasy Bill and Joe 21's licit homers, the others were colossal blunders or misplayed balls. The hero of the day was Sam who pitched extremely well and kept the M-Picks bats at bay. Also deserving special mentioning is Joe 21 who played flawless second base and made some slinky plays.
Also in attendance today: Andrew, Erwin, Kenny, Boz, Russell, Pete, Apache John, Gary, Big Joe, Nelson, Diesel, Jeff, Dave and yours truly.
August 10, 2003
M-Picks win double-header again: The threat of rain didn't discourage the sixteen or so diehards that made it to the field today, a field that wasn't in the best of conditions and puddles could be found in every nook and cranny. After a futile attempt of getting rid of the pools, we decided to play in adjacent field number 5 that was vacant at the time, but for game two we were forced to return to our field.
In game one the Elks were defeated easily 12-4. They didn't offer any resistance and the M-Picks bats were just on fire; a real slugfest! However game two was a dandy, one of the most exciting games of the season. By the seventh inning, the Elks were ahead 6-4 and they needed one more out to walk away with the victory, but their plans got quickly ruined. With two men on base, it was Andre's time at bat. The first pitch he sees, he swings at and pops it out. Game over? Nope! Andrew is playing third base and chases the ball. He jumps into a puddle and tries to make an over the shoulder catch but misses by inches. Next pitch: hasta la vista baby...a line drive well over Yaquir's head for a three-run dinger. The Elks batted again and had a chance of tying and even winning the game but the M-picks defense was just impeccable, especially infielders Pujols Freddie (who hit also a three-run homer in game one), Lawman Matt, Apache John and the writer who turned double plays like buckets in a well. The final score was 7-6.
Also in attendance: Jared (played hard and made a spectacular catch), Big Joe (lively bat today), Erwin (a couple of hits), Russell (hmm), Danny, Kenny, Pete, Fantasy Bill and Sam (hmm). As you can see, today I refrained myself from any sort of raucous evaluations or reviews as not to hurt any sensitive psyches. What a guy! See you all next week!
August 3, 2003
Last minute correction: Since to err is human, this humble hominid is not exempted from "mea culpa". It was brought to my attention that in today's report, I incorrectly stated that Jared drove in three runs. Let's set the record straight then, Jared had just one RBI and Russell drove in two.
August 3, 2003
Close but no cigar: Beat a team twice in the same day and by the same score that would be considered a rarity. Hold the opponent scoreless and have the same pitcher on the mound, well that would be history in the making. That's how close it was.
The M-Picks needed one more out to blank the Elks again by a score of 7-0. Big Joe had pitched superbly up to that point, thirteen scoreless innings. The inning before he had complained that his back was getting sore and wasn't able to throw the sinker but he didn't want to leave the mound, his adrenaline was really pumping. It was the bottom of the seventh, there were two outs and the bases were loaded. Jared was on deck, correction, a frustrated Jared. Not only he was having a bad day at the plate but his pitching had been dreadful at best. But being blanked again and make the last out wasn't in Jared's plans. No way Jose! That would be just unbearable. He needed to break the spell. He did so, by hitting a double up the alley and driving three runs. That's what you call a clutch hitter. Big Joe left the mound and was relieved by Kenny. The M-Picks would win the second game 7-3.
Even though Big Joe had a stellar performance, the player of the day was Pujols Freddie who made some spectacular defensive plays and crushed a three-run homer over Yaquir's head, a laser.
Also in attendance today: Mailman Nelson (a bit shaky), Russell (tried switch-hitting but sucked), Pete (only stayed for batting practice), Bye-bye Calvin (couldn't hit a ball out of the infield), Nick (great day for the kid), Anthony (was getting his father mad), Rich (after two years of inactivity very slow around the bases), Apache John (a so-so day), Erwin (he's back), Jeff (not his best pitching performance), Joe 21 (played great first base), Mitch (played only one game), Sam (not really tested at short), Lawman Matt (arrived late), Fantasy Bill (just an average day), Andre (shows once a month), Danny (good day), and the writer (played solid defense but hitting stinks).
A final note: Some of the guys would like to play an afternoon game after work, say Tuesday or Thursday at 6:00 p.m. If you would be interested, please contact Big Joe at momo60@aol.com. See you all next week!
July 27, 2003
Elks stop five-game losing streak by defeating the M-Picks and taking both ends of today's double-header 4-2 and 19-7 respectively. In game one, Big Joe took over Elks captain duties once again due to Erwin's absence. He pitched seven strong innings and his teammates, especially Bye-bye Calvin in the outfield, were just outstanding defensively. In the nightcap the Elks bats came alive. They literally mowed down the M-Picks pitching staff who allowed eleven runs in the top of the second. The infield play was also atrocious. They committed four errors in that inning alone.
Gary, who was the starting pitcher for the Elks in game two, was cruising along but in the top of the fourth he surrendered consecutive singles and loaded the bases. With one man out, Danny came up to the plate and just crushed a hanger over the reach of Fantasy Bill in left field for a grand slam. At that moment, with a seven run lead yet, the Big Unit got the hook immediately and was relieved by his captain who pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings for his first save of the year. Big Joe, the player of the game, also contributed with his bat. In a rare at bat from the right side of the plate, he drilled a ball in the gap for a three-run dinger.
Also in attendance today: Russell, Doug, Pete, Randy, Lawman Matt, Mathew, Apache John, Mailman Nelson, Sam, Cheing, Kenny, Marty (getting married soon), Mitch (like a gazelle 25 lbs. lighter), Jeff, Andrew, Pujols Freddie (solid at third the new daddy), Joe 21 (diving for balls but coming empty handed all day long) and yours truly. See you all next week!
July 20, 2003
M-Picks continue their torrid winning streak: On a hot and humid Sunday morning, the M-Picks dispose of the Elks easily 7-3 and 5-0. In the first game Gary pitched superbly and yielded just two hits in seven innings. Two of the three runs he gave up were unearned and with the exception of a misplayed ball at third by Joe 21, the M-picks defense was brilliant. The fielders kept flashing their leather and making clutch catches, turning double-plays and executing relay plays to perfection. The player of the game was Apache John who went 4 for 4. In Erwin's absence Big Joe took over captain duties.
Also in attendance today: Mailman Nelson (slight quad pull), Bye-bye Calvin (a couple of nice catches in the outfield), Danny (solid performance as always), George, Doug (tough time at third), Sam (minor calf sprain), Erin, Fantasy Bill, Kenny, Pete (tweaked his back), Jared, Jack, Russell, Mitch (great game defensively) and yours truly. Have a pleasant week, see you all next Sunday!
July 13, 2003
Last at-bat heroics by Jared give M-Picks triad. The M-Picks took three games from the Elks today in a rare triple-header. The M-Picks snagged wins of 7-2, 7-5 and 8-6. They led from start to finish in the first game but had to overcome Elks leads in the final two games. In game three, the M-Picks, driven by Pat's tenacious bearing in the field, mounted a dramatic comeback victory. With two men out, after a great running catch by Russell in right field, Jared blasted a ball in the gap that sailed over Kenny's head to complete the three-game sweep.
Although the over-crowed outfield was a bit feeble defensively at best, the infield glove work exhibited by both teams throughout the eighteen innings of play was just brilliant. Diesel and Doug excelled with two terrific over-the-shoulder catches and Pat and the writer made some dazzling and acrobatic belly-whoppers to snare a couple of line drives.
With regard to injured players, we had word from Joe Gaciaparra that he is ready to play but needs to take a family leave for a few weeks. Also Dave expects to be back soon. His finger needed some stitches.
Also in attendance today: Matt, Randy, Lawman Matt (injured his hammy), Jeff, George, Bye-bye Calvin, Andre, Fantasy Bill, Apache John (lively bat lately), Lucky Andrew (not so lucky today), Gary, Big Joe, Marty, Danny, Yaquir (a bit hesitant), Mailman Nelson (played great first base), Larry (nice catch in the outfield), Sam, Pete and Cheing.
Hasta la vista!
July 6, 2003
On a hot and thirst quencher Sunday summer morning the Elks and M-Picks split double-header. The Elks won the first game 9-7 and the M-Picks rallied to win the second one, 6-5. In the first inning of game one, the Elks took advantage of the M-Picks defensive mishaps and scored five times. Jerry (or Jeff?) pitched superb and his outfielders made some unbelievable plays, especially Mitch and Russell. The M-Picks finally managed to threaten in the sixth and seventh innings but came short.
Game two was a different story. The M-Picks were behind but Marty tied the game with a four-bagger and then Jared took care of the rest by blasting his second homer of the day, a bomb to dead center behind the reach of Fantasy Bill. On a sad note, Dave injured his finger again. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Also in attendance: Lucky Andrew, Bye-bye Calvin, Erwin, Head-on-collision Pat, Joe 21, Kenny, Doug, Big Joe, Gary, Erin, George, Jay, Lawman Matt, Sam, Mailman Nelson, Yaquir, Apache John and yours truly. See you all next week!
July 4, 2003
Happy 4th of July!
June 29, 2003
We made up for last week's rainout by playing a triple-header. If Erwin had bet the trifecta, he would have probably picked his team to win the three games. As it turned out, he would have won it since the Elks came victorious 5-2 twice and 4-2 once. The games were competitive but the Elks managed to deliver the big hit when it counted. Meanwhile, the M-Picks kept leaving men stranded on the bases and had a few running blunders. Both teams displayed great defense and except by Diesel's blast in the first game and Freddie's shot in the last one, there were not many long balls.
Also in attendance today were Big Joe (pitched well), Garry (a couple of nice hits), George, Larry, Doug, Kenny (as always great bat control and unusual slide to extend a single into a double), Head-on-collision Pat (just daring, he is Mr. Temerity), Joe 21, Calvin, Jeff (pitched well too), Jared, Apache John (since switching to the outfield has been playing great defense), Nelson, Russell (on the DL), Sam (brilliant catch in the outfield), Mitch (a couple of line drives but got robbed), Cheing (excellent catch at home with the bases loaded to get Erwin out), Marty, Bill, Andrew and the reporter. See you all next week.
June 15, 2003
Happy Father's Day! Finally, we enjoyed a gorgeous sunny morning, without any rain threats, a perfect day for playing ball. The field had a few puddles here and there but it was in decent condition and we had another great turnout, 28 or so. The first game was a pitching masterpiece by Big Joe. He didn't allow a run and kept Elks big bats at bay.The final score, 7-0, was a team effort victory; everyone contributed.
The second game was neck and neck, a real battle. After a series of bloopers, the Elks managed to chalk up three runs in the top of the sixth but the M-Picks didn't want to accept defeat and gallantry came back in the bottom of the seventh to tie things up thanks to Pat and Joe 21's zeal and bold willingness to take risks and pain. Before this mortal had to depart, the M-Picks had their big chance of taking the second game as well but Yaquir effortlessly caught yours truly's line drive in left field. Mitch who was directly responsible for prolonging the duration of the game has this to add:
[the outcome]....was 7-5....as Erwin's team managed to squeeze across 3 runs the inning after ya left....a collection of mostly clean hits did Mo's team in, who already shattered by the loss of their captain, and shocking trade of Peter to the other side....found themselves emotionally spent and refilling their water bottles from the puddles behind 2nd base.........anyway, it all started with a hard hit ball by Yaqir to Freddy at 3rd, who did his best to snare it, but the speedy Yaqir got down the line and things fell apart from that point on... There was a strange running play in that inning with Erwin on 1st base...and a pop up to Erin at 2nd, who had it all lined up......until Erwin ran right up to Erin...and screamed something that sound like: "I've got a "w" in my name and you don't!!"...causing her a moment of brief anguish and losing site of the ball"...hmm, what Erwin won't do for a "W"!!
Come the bottom of the inning and we actually mounted another rally, scoring one run...and yours truly had a moment to become a hero with the tying runs on base with 2 outs, but I accidentally hit the ball into Yaqir's glove in left field and brought this year's father's day festivities to an fitting end...."A POP OUT"!! actually, had I tied the game again, I might have been pounced upon by most of the remaining players already dirty and tired and probably running late for whatever plans they had....
...so, it's just as well...
oh yeah, this is important....Mike...AKA Jim Thome....caught up with me in the parking lot....seems somebody mistakenly took one of his bats...a black one...that he uses during the week for his league games....He has offered a $40,000 reward if somebody can get Carmen Elecktra to return this bat to him during his first at bat IN his league game....I'm kidding of course, but, really...if somebody is reading this and has the bat...please get in touch with him!!
Also in attendance today, newcomers Cheing and Justin, Diesel, Jared, Apache John, Nelson, Pete, George, Calvin, Russell, Joe Garciaparra, Garry, Dave, Sam, Kenny, Doug and the rest of the gang. Oh, let's not forget Fantasy Bill... a heck of a run, man! He looked like Jose Reyes motoring around the bases. What a fun day! See you all next Sunday!

The field, as expected, after the torrential showers of recent days, was in terrible condition. It was like quicksand, but we managed to play a riveting nine-inning game. Erwin failed to appear so Kenny took over captain duties for the Elks. The M-Picks took the lead on top of third thanks to Freddie's mammoth grand slam but the Elks didn't surrender, they kept fighting back and turned things around by winning decisively 17-10.
The player of the game was Kenny, who broom in hand showed not only his groundskeeper's abilities but his dexterity with a bat by going eight for eight. Just awesome! Ouch, this man is dangerous with a stick. Later on Freddie would hit another solo shot and Joe 21 would blast one to dead center, probably the longest ball hit this year. The brilliant play of the game was Jared's running catch in center field.
Also in attendance today: Sam, Marty, Calvin, Danny, George, Eric, Nelson, Dave, Pete, Doug, No. 77 and the writer.

Today, we observed Memorial Day in honor of our nation's armed forces men and women killed in war. The holiday is traditionally marked by parades, memorial speeches and ceremonies. But for most folks, it symbolizes the beginning of summer and the time to uncover and fire up the barbecue. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate. It rained all day long.
Yesterday, under overcast skies, the M-Picks claimed the first game by a 13-3 score, but dropped the nightcap 5-2. The soggy infield was a bit treacherous and ground balls were difficult to handle cleanly. The major incident was Mitch's freaky buttock injury that would prevent him from farting pain free for a couple of days.
Also in attendance were Big Joe, Jared, Erwin, Yaquir, Big Mike, Danny, Jona, Tommy, Mailman Nelson, Kenny, Doug, Calvin, Dave, Joe 21, Fantasy Bill, Russell, Pujols Freddie, Apache John, Marty, CPA Pete and yours truly.

Jared's quick stint at third base trying to emulate Ventura turned out to be a "venture" indeed but at the end the M-Picks sloppy defense more than compensated for his contretemps and the Elks snatched the first game of the double header by the smallest of margins: 6-5.
The second game was a different story. Gary's efforts were not squandered. He pitched masterly fanning Pat in three occasions and keeping the Elks' big bats at bay. The player of the game was Parker, who in the bottom of the fourth, with two men out and bases loaded, delivered the crucial blow followed by a scorching triple by non other that your humble servant to clear the bases. Afterward, it was a slugfest. Diesel got tattooed. The end result was an effortless 10-2 victory for the M-Picks. The defensive play of the game was a headlong leap nab by Joe 21 behind the plate, just outstanding.
Also in attendance: Larry (smoked the ball), Mike (a gazelle in the outfield), Mitch (must be hurting after that nice stretch), Big Joe, Bill (was tagged out at second; is your eye okay?), Dave (still detoxifying his longs), George, Kenny, Doug (great throw from third), Nelson (feeling great), Tommy (blasted a couple of balls), Angelo (I believe that's his name, played great left field), Calvin, Sam, Marty and Joe "Garciaparra". See you next week!

Happy Mother's Day. Today's tongue-in-cheek game report is a courtesy of a talented individual. He can play softball, he can field, he can hit and he can certainly write. Without any further introductions, the many-sided and quick-witted... Mr. Mitch Weingart:
Erwin Tags From Third, in First
Half of Twin Bill!
On a misty Mother's Day morning, 20 some odd faithful braved the cool weather and hot wives or mothers waiting at home, to participate in a double header, highlighted by Roger "Erwin" Cedeño's stunning tag from third base. Erwin, fresh off his wedding ceremony, (did you get any cake?, me neither!!) saw his team fall quickly behind in game one, as the M-picks scored easier than Hugh Grant with a 20 dollar bill on Hollywood Blvd. With Big Joe on the mound for the M-picks, the Elks had to pick and claw their way back into the game, and came close, falling one run short at the very end, for an 8-7 final score.
Freddie was swinging an awesome bat for the M-picks, including an opposite field blast in game one that sailed way over Larry's lit cigarette for what may have been the decisive homerun had I been taking notes on the game.
Game 2 started off better for the Elks, as they jumped off to a 3 run lead in the first inning and never looked back. Kenny was dominating at the mound, not only keeping the big hitters off balance but also making a record number of putouts on assorted pop-ups or ground balls. With some sparkling defensive plays, including an oddball assist on a simple pop out to third, the Elks managed to hold off the M-picks and take game 2, by the score of 8-4. Partially adding to the M-picks woes was Maurice's departure halfway through game two. This reporter has heard rumors of Mo getting a haircut from Diesel in the parking lot, but as of now, nothing has been substantiated.
Speaking of the parking lot, it looks like that the circus will be back in town these next few weeks, so parking will be a little tougher for a few Sundays. Maurice is inquiring with Cheryl to see if she can arrange for valet parking to assist us during these difficult times. Anyway, we were blessed with the usual crew of derelicts, homeless drifters and recently released parolees that make up our Sunday morning festivities. You all know your names, and since half of you are still in the witness protection program, I won't give ya away!
Enjoy the week...

Before we recount today's games incidences, we would like to congratulate newlywed Erwin and his bride. Best wishes honeymooners! Mitch took over captain duties for Erwin and the Elks winning streak came to an end. The M-Picks won decisively both games of the double-header, 13-8 and 20-12 respectively. The first inning on both games would be the deathbed for the Elks. The M-Picks just pummeled the Elks. They scored nineteen runs: ten in the first game and nine in the second one. The best play of either game was an over-the-shoulder catch by Joe 21 in foul territory beyond third base who then pivoted to his left and threw a missile to home plate to nail Little Joe trying to score. Mitch deserves praise for catching the ball and tagging the runner. Also Apache John, Marty, Jarred and especially Tommy made some impressive outfield catches.
Also in attendance Angelo, who hit for the cycle, Fantasy Bill, Gary, Andre, Sam, Freddie, Russell, Calvin, Pat, Nelson, and the reporter. See you all next week!

We had another great turnout. Thirty-one softball players made it to the field today, a field that was a bit swampy after Saturday's torrid showers. In addition, the Elks acquired two more victories (6-4 and 8-5 respectively) thanks to Oren's splendid running diving catch in right centerfield. That robbed Jarred from a homer and the game highlights. That hit would have evened up the score at that point. The winning pitcher was Gary. Also worth mentioning a 250 feet rocket shot that Ray Diesel drilled over Tommy's head, a diving stop by Pat and a brilliant plunging catch by Angelo in short center.
As we do every year, we passed the bucket today to help Mid Queens Fresh Meadows Sports Alliance. Our donation is a way to thank Gail and Marty for their generosity in obtaining our field permits free of charge during the course of the year. We collected $73.00. I'm glad to inform you also that Gail is already back home from hip replacement surgery and we would like to take this opportunity to wish her a speedy recovery.
Also in attendance today were Joe 21, Fantasy Bill, Erwin (who's getting married next week good luck!), Larry, Yaquir, Jack, Apache John, Eric, Freddie, Jay, Marty, Andrew, Andre, Doug, Kenny, Big Joe, Russell, Mailman Nelson, George, Calvin, Hilly, Mitch and the writer.

OPENING DAY IS A BLAST: In contrast to last week, we couldn't ask for better weather or attendance. On a beautiful sunny Easter Sunday morning 27 softball enthusiasts made it to opening day. The field was in superb condition, ready to play ball, and everyone seemed to be in high spirits after a long winter. The game started with a routine fly ball misplayed in left field. The Elks will quickly take the lead and even through they were flatly out-slugged by the M-Picks, Erwin's team, after nine grueling innings, would prevail. The final score was 12-9. The winning pitcher was southpaw Big Joe, a slimmer version, who pitched the entire game and displayed a very good fastball at times. Defensive plays were scarce except for a couple of double plays. The eventful moment of the game was Pat's mammoth shot to dead center. After striking out in his previous at bat, he blasted a two-run dinger well beyond Tommy's reach. Not so impressive was Apache John's performance. He was a bit worried about his physical integrity and looked more like a matador than a shortstop. Ole! We hope all of you enjoyed the holidays.
Also in attendance were: Mailman Nelson, Fantasy Bill, George, Lawman Matt, Big Mike, Joe 21, Kenny and his son, Andre, Marty, Yaquir, Ray Diesel, Parker, Andrew, Larry, Erwin, newcomers Sam, Freddie, Russell and Angelo, and yours truly.

This morning the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated as it returned to Earth killing astronauts David Brown, Rick Husband, Laurel Clark, Kalpana Chawla, Michael Anderson, William McCool and Ilan Ramon and bringing a new round of grief to a nation still in mourning after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Our prayers go out to the victims and their families, so that they may find the comfort needed to help ease their pain.
